Admission Requirements for Bachelors Courses in Malaysia

Bachelor’s degree courses or undergraduate degrees are offered as regular courses or honour’s degree programmes requiring higher standards of academic excellence than just a pass. Some universities take additional years to get a Honour’s degree. Bachelor’s degree programmes can be completed within 3 to 5 years. An undergraduate degree programme in Malaysia takes 3 years to complete. Entry requirements for bachelor’s degree programmes include STPM/GCE A-levels English proficiency or equivalent.  Students aged 19 years and above can apply for these courses. Most bachelor’s degree courses are in English. Some are also in the Malaysian language Bahasa Melayu.  

Entrance to a Malaysian institution of one’s choice is easy. The concerned International Student Application Form has to be filled from the chosen course and sent to the institution of choice with the following documents:
  • Certified copies of mark sheet of exam and academic certificates
  • Completed application form for accommodation if the latter is needed
  • Valid international passport (xerox)
  • Recent passport sized coloured photographs
  • Medical health report
  • Application fee ( non refundable)
  • STPM or UEC qualification equal to A level/SAM/AUSMAT/CPU/UNSW(HSC)
STPM: Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia exams are based on 3 semesters and each student is evaluated at the end of the semesters. Assessment includes coursework as well as school based projects. Contents of STPM syllabus is the same since pre-2012.

Admission Calendar for Higher Education in Malaysia

Variance: Academic year is different depending upon the educational institution. Each university follows its own timetable and the year is split into 3 semesters/trimesters lasting for 12 weeks each. There is a 2 week break in the middle and a longer 6 week break mid-year. 

Academic Year: University year commences in latter portion of February or beginning of March and finishes in October. Applications by international students must be made well in advance for visa processing formalities and screening processes to be completed in time for course commencement. Some universities even commence with undergraduate degree courses in July. Summer schools are also held from November to February.  

Application Procedure For Bachelor’s Degree Courses in Malaysia

Direct Application: For public higher educational institutions, there is currently no centralised system through which international student application can be made. Prospective students must apply to the concerned educational institution directly for the same. Admission procedure varies depending upon which educational institution is applied to.

EMGS: For bachelor’s degree courses in private higher educational institutions, students need to select the courses and institutions of their choice, and apply via EMGS or directly. EMGS is one stop application portal which makes application to Malaysian higher educational institutions easy for international students. Here are the steps you need to take for applying to educational institutions:

Documentation: You have to choose the course and institution of your preference. Following this, application for selected courses is via EMGS or direct application.  The institution then sends an offer letter following which you have to provide the required documents, fees and visa processing fee for medical screening alongside immigration and insurance processing fees. Once the formalities have been taken care of, students receive visa papers, student pass and undergo medical screening before commencing with their studies.
